This will allow you to type in an equation which will be formatted appropriately once you are done. In PowerPoint 2010 and later click the Insert tab then choose Equation in the Symbols group. There are multiple equations in the drop-down list just single-click what you want.
Select New LaTeX display from the IguanaTex tab of the ribbon and you will get a dialog box where you can type your equation.
